Waste always bothers us. As a fashion designer, I would love to discover and redesign
waste and incorporate them into my designs. Not only the waste can be useful again but it is
also part of my design. After going through many resources, one thing gave me a heads up that
my car needs new tires, that triggered my curiosity: Where did all the tires go after they are worn
out? With the question in mind, I went to a local used tire shop and found out some of the tires
can be used again, and some end up being used for racing track and boat ducks. Then some
are recycled into rubber mulch or used on the surface of the road. There are a lot of ways to
reuse used tires, but I have not yet heard of the fashion industry using them. I bought one tire
from the shop and started my experiment with it right away.
STELLA McCARTNEY
Stella is a fashion brand based in London. The brand values sustainability and always
uses recycled materials in their product. Recycled rubber would be a good material to avoid
making more rubber soles for shoes and new designs for garments can be developed. Also,
Recycle rubber can be a material that replaces leather as well, it is durable and safe for the
skin. Stella is a very mature brand, with a lot of experience in using recycled materials and
sustainable practices. I believe they can handle the material well and use them wisely.

Taking the tire apart without a proper machine was quite a challenge. I tried two different types
of saw and it did not work very well mainly because metal wires are going through the entire
circle. The picture above shows the part cut half open and the saw I was using.
